TEHRAN, IRAN: The Round Robin stage of the Asia/Oceania Zone Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Group III event that is taking place at the Enghelab Sport Complex in Tehran has already been completed.
The four teams that will compete for promotion to Group II in 2012 are Syria and Malaysia from Pool A and Kuwait and Iran from Pool B.
In Pool A, Syria completed their unbeaten run against Oman. The Syrians won all the matches as they have done in all the previous ties but the Omanis managed to take one set, an achievement considering the superiority that the Syrians have showed in Tehran.
The second classified team in Pool A has been Malaysia. The team captained by Deen Heshaam Tan Abdullah defeated Bangladesh 3-0 to book a place in the promotion Round Robin that will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The most contested match saw Malaysia´s Ariez Elyas Deen Heesham defeat Bangladesh´s Sree Amol Roy 46 75 64. The clash lasted for 2 hours and 35 minutes, more than the combined duration of the other two matches of the tie.
In Pool B, Kuwait´s performances have been amazingly consistent. The Kuwaitis are yet to drop a set and finished their participation in the first Round Robin with another whitewash against hosts Iran. Kuwait´s record in this event is even better than the leaders of pool A, Syrian, making them the favourite side for the promotion Round Robin.
Despite their defeat, Iran have finished second in Pool B and will compete for promotion on the weekend.
In the other tie in Pool B Vietnam defeated Kyrguistan 3-0.
Oman, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Kyrguistan will also play this weekend to decide which two teams are relegated to Group IV in 2013.
