The Qatar Tennis Federation will host the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV tie at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex beginning today.
Qatar is acting as host to 10 nations competing in two pools. The top nation in each pool will play against the runner-up in the other pool with the two winning nations promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group III for 2013. Ties are contested in a best-of-three rubbers format and are played on one day. There are two singles rubbers followed by a doubles rubber.
Pool A consists of United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Turkmenistan. The opening match will see Iraq, who missed out in the promotion play-off in 2011, face Saudi Arabia who are returning to the competition for the first time since 2009.
In Pool B, hosts Qatar are taking on Myanmar in the first match of the round-robin phase. Myanmar are competing in Group IV having been relegated in 2011 and will be looking to make an immediate return. The other nations in Pool B are Jordan, Singapore and Cambodia, who are making their Davis Cup debut.
