The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV tie came to a close today with Cambodia and United Arab Emirates moving up to Group III.  Cambodia won both their singles matches against Turkmenistan and UAE won both their singles matches against Qatar to guarantee their advancement in the zone group.

Qatar Tennis Federation President, Nasser Al Khelaifi, said of the event: “It has been an honor for the Qatar Tennis Federation to host this Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Group IV tie here in Doha. All the teams played incredible matches all week long and we congratulate the United Arab Emirates and Cambodia on moving on to Group III.”

The Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex was home to this week’s event that saw 10 countries compete in two pools for promotion to the zone’s Group III standing for 2013. Qatar, UAE, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Singapore, Myanmar, Iraq, Turkmenistan and Cambodia all took part in the action this week.

As Cambodia made its Davis Cup debut, the team is exceptionally thrilled at their results. The fledgling team made a strong statement with their achievements this week and look forward to continued success in their Davis Cup dreams and continuing to build tennis in Cambodia. Team captain, Tep Rithivit, said of this victory, “It has been such a long journey and we’ve worked so hard. We felt like the dark horses coming into this event – but very prepared dark horses. All that work has really paid off and it means so much to move on to the Group III stage.”

UAE’s team captain, Mahmoud Khalifa, said after the matches, “The guys did a really good job. They deserve this win. We had some touch matches all week but we were able to come through and it means a lot to advance.”

Tournament Director, Saad Al Mohannadi, said of the event: “The Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV tie here in Qatar brought together ten very different teams all with the same goal – to play for their country and showcase their abilities. We had wonderful round robin match play all week long and the play-offs today were nothing short of superb as all the players put 100 percent effort into moving on in the world standings.”
