Next tie 13-15 September 2013
Great Britain will travel to Croatia in an attempt to return to the World Group. Leon Smith's team might be buoyed by the fact that the last time they reached the top tier of the competition, they defeated Croatia in a World Group play-off to gain promotion. This will be just the second Davis Cup meeting between the two nations.
Last tie 5-7 Apr 2013
Great Britain produced its first 0-2 comeback since 1930 when it defeated Russia 3-2 in the Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round. Having lost both rubbers on the opening day in five sets, things didn't look good for the hosts in Coventry. A doubles win on Day 2 gave them hope, and in the first of the reverse singles James Ward found himself two sets-to-one down against Dmitry Tursunov but rallied back for a dramatic victory. That left Dan Evans against Evgeny Donskoy and the Brit defied a huge ranking difference (245 places) to win in straight sets and complete a famous triumph.
History
Great Britain has lifted the Davis Cup trophy on nine occasions. Its last title dates back to 1936 when Fred Perry and Bunny Austin were leading the team. Great Britain is the only nation that has participated in all the editions of the Davis Cup from 1900, although it competed under the name British Isles until 1912.
